Prom Season - Centennial High School - Caldwell Senior Photographer

Just as spring senior pictures are wrapping up, prom season takes over.

Even though every high school student has their own phone, and is pretty skilled at taking a selfie, or even group pictures with friends, sometimes an event needs to be celebrated with some formal pictures. Between the beautiful dresses, the hair and make-up for the girls, the suit and tie for the boys, this day is a special occasion.

In this case, prom weekend was also Mother's Day weekend, and the dress had special meaning. It was the same dress that the mother had worn for her prom years earlier. More on that later.

It was a hot afternoon; almost 90 degrees and almost no clouds in the sky. While walking around Kathryn Albertson Park to try to find the best location, the park was filled with activity, including others who were also dressed for their own prom night with parents in tow, excited for their children's special night.

The goal was to find an area with some protection from the sun. Not only was the sun hot, but it was also creating some harsh sunlight that made picture-taking a bit challenging.

Having found a location that followed all of the park rules, some extra lighting equipment was set up to create pleasing light. Then, everyone arrived. It was a group thing. A group of friends creating memories. And while photographing groups isn't part of this photographer's specialty, this day was an exception.

When not being photographed, the group of friends took their own selfies and talked about everyday things. The stuff that seems trivial, but between friends, it's a whole conversation. You know the kind. The stuff that reminds you that you're with your people. They get you.

And this group got it. They all had the customary neck tie to match the dress. But they also had matching eyewear. Fun colors that finished off their ensemble and added to the fun.

The girls had their moment in front of the camera.

Not to be forgotten, the boys also got their own moment, too.

...now, back to the dress.

It was perfect. And Ellie's eyes even matched her dress. And as with all senior sessions, it's important to pay attention, Find a relaxed expression, a comfortable smile. and sometimes, a bit of that personality and excitement of the day.

On this day, I also got to see that same excitement as mother and daughter got to share this experience together. Prepping the hair, getting the dress ready, and even the worry about wanting everything to be perfect. Photographing it was the icing on the cake.

It's a special thing, photographing teens. As photographers, we get to know them in a short period of time and get to learn about their plans for the future and get to see how excited they get about the new phase in their life just starting to blossom.

After all of the posing and picture taking was done, it was time to relax. As Mia, Ellie's mom, watched her daughter walking with friends to the next part of their evening, a wave of nostalgia filled the air.

She saw herself in her daughter. The day-to-day challenges of being a mother were all forgotten as she saw her 17-year-old daughter, all grown up in front of her. On this day, she was a mother doing what mothers do: hoping that the day was special for Ellie and doing everything possible to make it perfect. And it was, because that's what mother's do.

At the time this is published, the search is on for a bit of that photographic nostalgia. Some proof that this dress was worn by Mia years earlier, when she wasn't a mom. At a time when she about the same age, ready to take on the world herself.

Keep scrolling. It might just be there.
